Log jam near the Flat River
A lake or river full of cut logs was not unusual in the early history of Montcalm County lumbering. A sawmill would be located at the outlet of a lake and the outlet stream would furnish the water power to operate the sawmill. The men who walked around on the floating logs had spiked boots and long poles to move the logs to the sawmill.
