There are three types of guardianships of minors handled through the Probate Court: 1) a parental appointment of guardian (MCL 700.5202) 2) a limited guardianship (MCL 700.5205; and 3) a full guardianship (MCL 700.5204). The statutes cited explain the requirements for each type of guardianship. You may view the entire statute at www.legislature.mi.gov. The Court and/or court personnel cannot advise you on the appropriate method of obtaining guardianship or granting parental power of a minor to another adult. As in all legal matters, it is recommended that you use an attorney. If you attempt to handle this matter on your own, please refer to the brochure “Notice to Persons Representing Themselves in Probate Court”.
