Sheriff Barnwell [Click here to view full size picture] Sheriff Barnwell has served as Montcalm County Sheriff since 2001. He began his law enforcement career with the Sheriff’s Office in 1974 as a Dispatcher. Since then he has held nearly every position within the Sheriff’s Office including Corrections Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Jail Commander, 911/Central Dispatch Director and Undersheriff. Sheriff Barnwell also served for 12 years on the Sheriff’s Underwater Search and Rescue Team.

Sheriff Barnwell graduated from Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Delta Community College Police Academies and also attended the National Sheriff’s Institute in Longmont Colorado. He is the past chairman of the Central Michigan Enforcement Team, which is a multi-jurisdictional Drug Task Force, which includes Montcalm, Newaygo, Mecosta and Ionia Counties. Sheriff Barnwell is a member of the Michigan Municipal League Law Enforcement Action Forum and currently serves as the chairman of the Southern Committee. Sheriff Barnwell is a second-generation law enforcement officer following in the footsteps of his father the late Tom Barnwell who also served as Sheriff of Montcalm County from 1969 through 1980.

Sheriff Barnwell is the member of the Montcalm County Republican Party and a member and past president of the Stanton Rotary Club. Sheriff Barnwell served for 21 years in the United States Naval Reserve and retired in 1999 as a Chief Petty Officer. Sheriff Barnwell is married and has three children. Sheriff William Barnwell
