IMPORTANT CHANGES IN GUN LAWS: (PUBLIC ACT 377 OF 2012)

* *Effective 12-18-12, new Firearms laws have taken effect.

PURCHASE PERMITS: 

Note:

**An individual may apply for a License to Purchase a Pistol (LTP) at any police agency in the state that issues License to Purchase Forms. 

 

Effective 12-18-12***NEW LAW-PUBLIC ACT 377 states a PURCHASE PERMIT IS NOT NECESSARY IF YOU PURCHASE A GUN FROM A FEDERAL FIREARM LICENSED (FFL) DEALER.  A PISTOL SALES RECORD (available  from the FFL Dealer) can be used to purchase a gun from an FFL Dealer.

*The Dealer keeps 1 copy

*The buyer keeps one copy (this is your registration)

*And the buyer mails the MSP copy to the law enforcement agency in the jurisdiction where he/she resides.

If you are not purchasing from a FFL Dealer, you will need a PURCHASE PERMIT:

 

 TO OBTAIN A PURCHASE PERMIT:

(effective December 18, 2012 – PUBLIC ACT 377):

*You now have 30 days to purchase a handgun with a Purchase Permit.

*The Buyer and Seller fill out and sign all 3 forms.

 PLEASE PRINT ALL THE INFORMATION AND SERIAL NUMBERS  CLEARLY and CORRECTLY!

*The Seller keeps one form.

* The Buyer keeps one form- this yellow card is your Gun Registration.

* AND, within 10 days of purchase, the Buyer must mail or bring the other form (the MSP copy) to:

Attn:  Gun Department

***You no longer have to bring the gun in for registration. (Firearms Act 372 of 1927, Statute MCL 28.422)

 

*You must carry your copy of this license with you for 30 days after purchasing the gun, if in possession of the gun.  After that time, you are not required to have the license with you.

*If you have a Concealed Pistol License, you do not need a purchase permit to purchase a handgun.  You can us an RI-060 Pistol Sales Record.  Then,

CONCEALED PISTOL LICENSE INFORMATION:(CPL)
CPL Packets may be picked up at the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office, the Montcalm County Clerk’s Office, or any local Police Department or Law Enforcement Agency, or click below to print a RI-012 Concealed Pistol License Application:

FINGERPRINTING HOURS FOR Concealed Pistol Licenses:
Hours for fingerprinting and CPL Applications  are :

 Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

CLOSED from  Noon – 1:00 p.m.                                                                                      INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING CPL PACKET: 

*REVISED JANUARY 2009.

**AFTER SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING A CPL CLASS, YOU WILL NEED TO:

  1. TAKE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO THE MONTCALM COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE:
    • A completed CPL Application (DO NOT SIGN THE APPLICATION!) Your signature MUST BE WITNESSED at the Clerk's Office.
    • A copy of your CPL Class Certificate:** NOTE: The Certificate MUST state that the class complies with PA 372, Section 5j of 1927.
    • A Passport Photo - NO PHOTOCOPIES! Travel Agencies and some area retail stores take Passport Photographs. The Montcalm County Clerk's Office will take Passport photos for an $18.00 fee.
    • Cash, check or money order for Application Fee: ($105.00 for all Applications, new or Renewals).*Checks or money orders are made payable to the Montcalm County Clerk. The Clerk's Office will give you a receipt and true copies of your CPL Application.

2.     THEN, TAKE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO THE MONTCALM COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE WHERE YOU WILL BE FINGERPRINTED: (located at 659 North State Street, Stanton, MI)

***NOTE: Even if you have previously been fingerprinted for a CPL, you still need to appear at the Sheriff's Office with your paperwork and Application from the Clerks' Office for processing.

  • Your receipt and true copies from the Clerk's Office.
  • Your valid Driver's License or State ID. Your license must show your current address.

   -Please keep in mind that our Gun Board meets once a month.  It can take 3 - 4 months for an Applicant to receive their Concealed Pistol License.   We recommend that you apply for renewals 3 months in advance.

 

*CPL Licenses are now valid for approximately 5 years (depending on your date of birth).- A license to carry a concealed pistol is valid until the applicant's date of birth that falls not less than four years or more than five years after the license is issued.    You will receive notification in the mail regarding the status of your CPL Application.  If your license is approved, you will receive a letter telling you to go to the County Clerk's office to sign and pick up your license.
