Pork production in Montcalm County is an integral part of the county's agriculture base. In 1997 there was over 3,000 sows on 35 farms. A significant potion of the county's pork industry is in finishing hogs. In 1997 there was over 55,000 hogs on 55 farms in the county. In 1997 the County's swine industry had a gross income of over 4.5 million dollars. All the hogs produced in Montcalm County are for the commercial meat industry. A small portion will be processed locally. (local processing ) Most of Montcalm county's hogs will be shipped out of the state to large packers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Montcalm County is served by three buying stations.
